Baby milestones month by month ✨
Milestones are a range, not a deadline. Some babies roll at 3 months and walk at 9; others take the scenic route. This guide shows typical windows — not pass/fail dates.
0–1 month 🌱
- Turns head toward sounds
- Brief eye contact
- Reflex smiles (real smiles come next month!)
2 months 😊
- First real social smiles
- Coos and gurgles
- Follows objects with eyes
3–4 months
- Holds head steady during tummy time
- Reaches for toys
- Belly laughs
- Some babies roll belly to back
5–6 months
- Rolls both ways
- Sits with support, then without
- Starts solids (around 6 months)
- Babbles: "ba-ba," "da-da"
7–9 months 🦀
- Sits unsupported
- Pincer grasp starts
- Crawls (or scoots, or commando-shuffles)
- Responds to their name
10–12 months 👣
- Pulls to stand, cruises along furniture
- First word (often "mama" or "dada" with meaning)
- Waves bye-bye
- First steps — any time from 9 to 16 months is typical
Remember: milestones are a range. "When" matters less than "progressing." If anything feels off, your paediatrician is the one to ask — not the internet.
When to chat with your paediatrician
- No social smile by 3 months
- Not holding head up by 4 months
- No babbling by 9 months
- Not sitting independently by 9 months
- No gestures (waving, pointing) by 12 months
Capture the "firsts" as they happen 💫
Just say it: "She rolled over!" New Baby saves the moment — and the date — to a warm, searchable timeline.
